ABOUT OUR SLINGS

What makes a sling strong? The strength of a sling is found in the stitching of the side pockets where all the stress is placed. Patio Furniture Supplies sews each pocket with a clean-edge, double fold, and those three layers make the pocket stronger. Adding to our pockets’ strength and durability is Tenara® thread, which is made to withstand conditions outdoors. It is not affected by UV light, cleaning agents, chemicals, saltwater or extreme weather, and it will not deteriorate from exposure to the elements. Why would it? Tenara® is made by GORE®, whose jackets, caps and gloves are more widely known as Gore-Tex. Note that while Tenara® thread is not affected by cleaning agents and chemicals, concentrated mixtures of harsh products can damage sling fabric.

THE ABCs OF FABRIC GRADES

Patio Furniture Supplies offers sling and umbrella fabrics in the same Grade A-B-C method in which you selected the fabric for your high-end furniture. All of Patio Furniture Supplies’ fabrics, whether Grade A, B or C, are of high quality and are made in the U.S. specifically for patio furniture and umbrellas.

The difference in grades is the cost of producing the fabric — not the quality of the fabric. Production costs are affected by the type of thread(s) the fabric is made from, the number of threads per inch, number of colors in the fabric and the complexity of the weave. For example, the GRL White and ECL Off White are Grade A fabrics and receive our highest durability rating. Fabrics with a wicker appearance have the same durability rating but are Grade B. Grades A and B are comprised of fabrics made by Phifer Incorporated and Twitchell Corporation, both based in Alabama. The fabrics are typically manufactured from vinyl-coated polyester, pvc-coated polyester or with an Olefin blend. They are resistant to fading and mildew.

Popular Sunbrella® solution-dyed acrylic fabrics have long been known for their use on umbrellas, marine awnings and outdoor cushions. But in recent years, a blend of pvc and Sunbrella® acrylic fibers, was introduced for slings and matching umbrellas. Sunbrella® sling fabrics are resistant to fading, mildew, chlorine and chemicals. They can be cleaned with a water/bleach/detergent solution. Both the pockets and hems of slings with Grade C/Sunbrella® fabrics are sewn with Tenara® thread because Tenara® is also resistant to chlorine, chemicals and sun. Grade C/Sunbrella® fabrics are made by Glen Raven in North Carolina.

There’s a fabric for everyone. All our fabrics are manufactured specifically to be used outdoors as slings and umbrella canopies, but some are softer, some have a more open weave to drain rain more easily, some are the ultimate in durability. Because of the variety of textile personalities and because computer monitors are notoriously inaccurate for color, Patio Furniture Supplies recommends you order free samples to help you make the most-informed selection before placing an order for slings. Swatches are free, and you can choose up to six.

Patio Furniture Supplies recommends you follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Click on How To & Colors at the top/right of the page, go to Colors and select any Grade. Then click on a fabric for characteristics, details and other information about the fabric.

Leading patio furniture manufacturers like Brown Jordan, LLoyd Flanders, Tropitone, Winston and Woodard use fabrics made by Phifer, Twitchell and Glen Raven.
