How To Measure Vinyl Straps

Use a metal tape measure; they're more accurate than some cloth tapes.

Vinyl strap is cut 7% shorter and stretches when installed.

Step 1: Measure Width

Measure the width of the strap in the middle (Figure 1), not on the ends where it is attached to the frame. As the strap is stretched, its width shrinks about a quarter-inch.
• If it measures approximately 1 3/4", order 2" vinyl strap.
• If it measures approximately 1 1/4", order 1 1/2" vinyl strap.

Step 2A: Measure Length for Single-Wrap Method

Start the tape measure at one hole and measure across to the facing hole on the opposite side of the frame, following the same path that the strap will take. (Figure 2)

Step 2B:
Measure Length for Double-Wrap Method

Start the tape measure at one hole and follow the double-wrap path that the strap will take ending at the facing hole on the opposite side. (See Figure 3. The tape measure should be wrapped once around each bar.)

Step 2C:
Measure Length for Clip Method

If using metal clips, start the tape measure where the strap attaches to the clip on one bar. Measure across to the corresponding clip on the opposite side of the frame, following the same path that the strap will take.

Step 3: Calculate the Length to Cut Each Strap

Reduce the length of the strap measurement by 7%. The calculation accounts for the position of the holes.
Examples:
• If the length you measured is 23", then 23" x .93 = 21.39" length to cut the strap.
• If the length you measured is 29", then 29" x .93 = 26.97" length to cut the strap.

Step 4a: Order vinyl by the roll

If ordering vinyl strap by the roll, multiply the “length to cut the strap" by the number of straps for the total for the total number of inches; then divide by 12 to convert to feet. Vinyl strap is available in 50-foot, 100-foot and 200-foot rolls.
(If attaching the straps with rivets or screws, drill the hole 3/8" from the end of the strap.)

Step 4b: Order pre-cut straps

If ordering pre-cut straps and the length to cut the strap is not a half inch or whole inch, round up. Examples:
• If the length to cut the strap is 21.39", order pre-cut length of 21 1/2".
• If the length to cut the strap is 26.97", order pre-cut length of 27".

If you order pre-cut straps 21" long, the overall length of the straps you receive will be 21" from end to end, not from hole to hole. The calculation accounts for the position of the holes.
